In 1972, computer scientist Vernon Sullivan Thompson woke up in a frenzy. In his personal diary, he wrote:

"Dreamt something odd & fantastic. On my writing desk was a sideways box whose height spanned from my wrist to my elbow. Within it were little men with steel masks who held shiny silver instruments. I would pick up a conductor's wand and wave it around, and they would play the undeveloped songs of my dreams on a whim. Precisely, without objection, and without pay. Upon waking I shivered not from the cold air but the notion that one day this power may be entrusted upon a human."

Later, he told his tale to his record executive friend, who then offered him swathes of money to make his dream a reality. We at Wibi Inc. would like to take this time to reflect on the fruits of Vernon Sullivan Thompson's efforts, and how they lead to today's Virtual Studio Technology, or VST.

In an effort to raise awareness of this modern conduit of digital music, we have carefully sorted out the up-and-coming from the down-and-going, and commissioned eight musicians to each make an exclusive dance song using a set of free Virtual Studio Technology plug-ins we found on-line.

These waveform magicians demonstrate a variety of styles achievable with VST: from the soft, soothing soundscapes of Stone Soup, to the robotic rumblings of The Administrator of Sound, to the ever-effective deflection tactics of Captain Arson. There's a VAST world out there — and it's called VST.

Also, keep raving.

Inspired by the "Intone Unreleased Projects" series by Richard H. Kirk, "Warrior Sampler EP 1" from Warrior Records, and somewhat by "Songs from a Sensual Revolution" by Thomas Leer.

Notes

^01. Power to Posers - Pivot to Audio (Anne)

Remark: Power to Posers are Bartholomew Winchester and Harold Chip. They started as a sort of cold wave-funk-musique concrete act, but to the dismay of their devoted fanbase, they eventually moved forward in time.

Plugins: easy-drum o4 SE 909 • easy-vintage-bass 01 • easy-joy o1 • DSK Overture [for drumkit]

^02. Creatio ex Nihilo - Get On The Floor (And Then Dance) (If You Do It In The Other Order The Appeal Is Kinda Gone) (Anne)

Remark: Creatio ex Nihilo was spotaneously born out of a hole in a tree. Despising those around him named things like "Joe" and "Fred", he named himself Creatio ex Nihilo. In search of an explanation to his absurd origin, he is currently probing all crevices of preceived reality through his ongoing psychosomatic voyage into electronic music.

Plugins: easy-drum o4 SE 909 • easy-joy o1 • easy-drum X8 • DSK Overture

^03. Knaves of Rave - Funk or Flunk

Remark: Knaves of Rave are brothers Joe "Jazzard" Harlington-Leonhard and Fred "Frazzard" Harlington-Leonhard, commonly regarded as the best up-and-coming EDM producers of the Angry Birds community webforum. When asked if their honorary title as "knaves" means they tell only lies, they responded "no."

Plugins: easy-beat-box • easy-synth 02 • easy-drum o4 SE 909 • DSK Overture [for drumkit]

^04. The Lone Wolves ft. Oxymoron - Physically Crushed by the Beat

Remark: The Lone Wolves are a five-piece EBM group who have never met in person and don't know or care what the rest of the band are doing. Oxymoron is an unknown legend who sings on some obscure hits.

Relation: This is a remix of Wibi - 1 album you must hear after you die disc 1 track 8.

Plugins: easy-drum X8 • DSK Overture • easy-vintage-bass 01

Hello, guys. How we all doing?

^05. The Administrator of Sound - Dooba Doop Boop (Anne)

Remark: The Administrator of Sound is the entity responsible for all audio. Any sound he does not permit to exist slowly gets quieter and quieter until it is completely silent. This recording was recovered from a drone sent into his domain — we suppose he allows it to exist out of flattery.

Composition: on robotic voice effect: "Resampled vocals to 11025hz, then applied two Delays with very short repeat times (0.005 and 0.01 seconds). -2.90dB per echo, and 30 echos." use of sentence case heavily implies the song was made by Anne, or at least that he wrote that info.

Plugins: easy-beat-box • easy-synth 02

That's right.
Are you hearing me?
Yes, that's right.
Yes, that's right.
Yes.
Okay.
Let's continue.
Yes.
Yep, yep, yep.
Yes.
Yes.
Uh-huh.
That's right.
Yes, that's right.
[laughs and then chokes]

^06. Stone Soup - Shards of Tomorrow (Anne)

Remark: Stone Soup is Gregor Cann. His hobbies include snorting crushed-up bone marrow and writing professional reviews for coffee table books. One day, his friend bet him $12 that he could start his own amateur electronica project; he did, and lost the bet.

Plugins: easy-drum X8 • easy-joy o1

^07. Captain Arson - My Music Did It (Anne)

Remark: Captain Arson is frequently known for lighting the dance floor on fire.

Plugins: easy-drum X8 • easy-synth 02 • DSK Overture

Hey guys, I made a new version of the "I don't know what to record" sample. Enjoy!

^08. Instruction and Rhythm - Let's Move the Body

Remark: Instruction and Rhythm is an alias of one Stuart Bradford. This composition was part of his thesis on how the human mind reacts differently to spoken commands when they are placed against music.

Plugins: easy-drum o4 SE 909 • easy-synth 02 • easy-vintage-bass 01
