The boxset that never was.

A collection of 7" singles recorded spontaneously at our musical keyboard. Be prepared to hit the volume control keys, as these are all unprocessed recordings from our phone, held varying distances away from our mouth and the keyboard.

Inspired by the (kinda stupid) "go make a single" ethos of The Desperate Bicycles, and the (bold and irreverent) "mash a keyboard on top of a loop while ad-libbing lyrics" technique of late Suicide.

Notes

^1.01. People in Elevators (Princess)

People in elevators going up and down
Pressing at the buttons to see them light up
This one made a fork, that guy made a cup
Guys in an elevator going up and down
It's impossible to do that and still have a frown

People in elevators realize they're late for an important meeting
Oh no. Oh no. Oh no
So they stay in the elvators for the rest of the day
And then they say
"Oh thank goodness you came. I was stuck in there"

^1.02. The Writer (Princess)

Every jar of ink has a story in it waiting to come out

^2.01. The Afterparty (Lowry)

Drunk at the afterparty
Still waking up from the afterparty
Getting ready for the after-afterparty

Waking up in the afterparty
Wondering when it will end
No, I didn't say I wanted it to end
I just wondered when

^2.02. The Beforeparty (Lowry)

Man...
My face hurts!

^2.03. ThRSDo (Lowry)

Remark: originally recorded for a Low Bar S/T follow-up named "IF YOU PLAYACT BEING A THINKER YOU WILL BECOME ONE"; was to be overdubbed with other recordings by Wisp and Anne

^2.04. Thieves (Lowry)

It's not good writing if they let the thieves get away.
We haven't been told why we should empathize with them.

^3.01. Hurricane (Wisp)

If a hurricane came by and sweeped this place around
Would nobody know it was there?
If a hurricane came by and sweeped this place out of town
Would anybody know it was here?

^3.02. Pretty Face (Wisp)

You have a pretty face that I can't wait to meet
It just sucks I'm scared of faces

^3.03. The Bureaucrats' Disappearing Island (Wisp)

There's no record of this place existing

^3.04. Productivity (Wisp)

If you have something to do, do it now, do it now!
Do it now, do it now!

^3.05. Modern Robin Hood (Wisp)

A man walked into a building where a lot of people were waiting and says "would everyone like a million dollars?" and they say "yes, yes!"

^3.06. Amazing Human Feats (Wisp)

An acrobat can jump over high, high buildings
He just refuses to
And now you know

^3.07. Forecast (Wisp)

Tomorrow's gonna be a great day!

^3.09. Discovery (Wisp)

This is in 3! I've been scammed.

^3.12. Pink Onion (Wisp)

Well I told you about the train station
And the discovery we made
Told you 'bout the ocean
And the amazing human feats

Wait, this one's also in 3! Fucking hell.

^3.13. Ag (Wisp)

An old farmer who lives a very long time away from here
Goes outside to see that all his crops have been sent back in time

^4.01. I Was Here! (Anne)

I was here! [ad nauseum]

^4.02. Your Resume Is in High Demand (Anne)

We've noticed your resume is in high demand
We have an exciting new opportunity for you

^5.01. Words to My Name (Tango)

Remark: this song and Boy Genius predate all other songs on 2'11"; it's about how we got the impulse to make 2'11" because a punk band from 45 years ago said anyone can make a single and it spoke to our desire to claw our way up the meritocracy

Look at me, Ma! I put words to my name
Look at me, Ma! The world won't treat me the same
I'm something higher now, they don't know it yet
I'm something higher now, they don't know it yet
Look at me, Ma! I've laid it all out
Look at me, Ma! I'm just waiting for some cardboard I can cut out
Look at me, Ma! I have an index into the list
Look at me, Ma! I wrote to the yellow pages
Look at me, Ma! History's written by the winners
Look at me, Ma! I'm writing history

Look at me, Ma! I made it all on my own
Like great men once did!
Look at me, Ma! Ma, you don't look at me too much today
You told me I was set up for something great, Ma. Look, Ma! I've achieved everything, Ma! Why won't you look at me again? Why won't you look at my face again? Is this not the face you wanted to see?
Ma, I'll do anything for you, I'll throw away this rusty old thing, I swear, I'll get rid of any-

^5.02. Boy Genius (and the Respect He Earned) (Tango)

I don't see my name on the newspaper enough!
I'll have to write to them to correct this error!

Maybe they wrote my name in invisible ink
I have a friend who'd do some pranks like that

...
